Choosing a Reiki Master/Teacher my answers to these important questions by: Lyn Elizabeth Ayre, RT-CRA (C) February 3, 2003
What should I ask of a potential Reiki Master? What does Reiki mean to me in my personal life? How
do
I use Reiki and incorporate it into my daily life? What is my understanding of the nature of Reiki energy? Can I trace my lineage back to Mikao Usui? Do I teach the history of Reiki? Do I teach the five principals of Reiki? When do I suggest my students may be ready for public? How many people do I teach in a class? In Reiki (pronounced Ray Key), Master means teacher. Master also means that the student has come far enough along in his or her development that troublesome lifestyle habits and limiting belief systems are taking less and less time and energy away from living a conscious life. A Master has taken the responsibility to become Master of himself or herself. It is not a designation used to manipulate others. Ensure, for your own peace of mind, that the person you are considering to be your Reiki Master/Teacher has something special that you want and that you are willing to do the work required to go about getting that special something. What should I
ask of a potential Reiki Master? 1.
What kind of training do you offer? 2.
Are you registered with the Canadian Reiki Association? 3.
Do you offer on-going support in the form of shares, exchanges, phone calls, email? 4.
Do you supply a complete manual, which includes everything you teach? 5.
Do you set up your table and show your students how to do a healing on someone
else? 6.
Do you show your students how to do a self-healing session? Do you allow them
to do a complete session? 7.
What is included in the cost of the course? 8.
Where are you located? 9.
How much does the training cost? 10.
How many people do you teach at once? 11.
How long have you been teaching? What does Reiki mean to me in my personal life?
For
me, Reiki means health and well-being. I had been very ill for a very long
time. I had been diagnosed with Lupus and was being investigated for
probable Multiple Sclerosis. There were several other medical diagnoses
along the way. I experienced a variety of devastating neurological symptoms
that, at times, resulted in the loss of my mobility, my thoughts, my
sexuality, my speech, my employability, but most of all, my peace of
mind. For
about a month, I had been praying several times throughout the day for God’s
healing grace to enter me and restore me to health and mental clarity. As
each day passed, I became more and more willing to change my thinking and
let go of old outworn ideas and ideals. I felt a drastic change begin to occur
in me. At
the time, I was teaching a meditation course. There were business cards and
brochures of other practitioners on display in the area where I worked.
One night, I picked one up and read the word Reiki. Something struck a
chord in me. I called the woman and made an appointment for the following
week. About halfway through the session, I began to giggle. I opened my eyes
and saw a beautiful gold and green light emerging from her head and heart
and hovering over me. I then made the association that God’s healing
grace was working in my life – literally. My practitioner’s name was
Grace. I
spoke with her after and told her I wanted to learn how to do what she was
doing. We made an appointment for the following week. We spent some of
the day going over the history, hand positions and self-healing. She gave
me another full-body session and then performed the four attunements for Level
One Traditional Usui Reiki on me. As
the energy worked its way down through my Chakra system, I experienced many
things from euphoria to severe diarrhoea. Throughout those three
detoxifying weeks, I felt on top of the world. I knew changes were being
wrought in me. At the time, I had no idea to what extent. I just kept being
willing to allow the changes in me, whatever they were. A
few days later, it was Father’s Day and we had my family in for dinner. My
sister brought a bowl of strawberries for dessert. I usually have only a
tiny slice, refraining from eating them lest my mouth and throat break
out in canker sores. No bumps appeared in my mouth. I made mention of this and
took another strawberry – still no problem. My husband warned me
against pressing my luck. I had another strawberry. In the end, I ate my
portion and several others, to boot. I was in heaven. The next day, I
drank orange juice and ate tomatoes with no allergic reaction. I was floored.
I knew it was Spirit’s Reiki energy working another miracle in my life. The
swelling in my joints started to go down to the extent that I was able to
start a weight training program and do interpretive dance to Pachelbel. My
eating habits are changing naturally. As well as the above, I have added
blueberries, cranberries, arugula, grapes, salad greens and baby spinach
– most of which I wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot-pole, prior to this.
Some
days, I would forget to take my meds and still feel okay. This was a true
blessing. My
energy has returned and I am up at 6:00 am to do my prayers and meditation.
Then I do a full-body self-healing and some reading. I’m then ready to
start my day. I have very little need for naps anymore but will take one
if I need to. When I go to bed at night, I don’t feel exhausted and in pain,
I feel wonderful and have a restful night’s sleep. I’m
not garbled in my thinking – it’s been a while since I tried to put the
milk in the coat closet. I don’t forget why I have walked into a room.
I can remember everyone’s name and the name of all the objects I
encounter in my daily round. My
dream life has become very vivid and pointed. I learn many lessons while
analyzing my dreams. Writing down my dreams is an important part of my
growth. All
of this and much more, happened to me after my Level One attunement and as a
direct result of my willingness to allow Spirit’s Reiki energy to do
its job. I
took the Level Two attunement three weeks later. I experienced what is known
as a healing crisis where the symptoms are exacerbated to an extreme
degree. It was my chance to have another look at the dis-eases in my body
and, once and for all, let them go to God. I haven’t had any Lupus or MS
symptoms in several months. As part of Level Two, I created a Reiki Box,
which I use every day for 10-15 minutes after my regular self-healing
session. I do distance energy sessions everyday as a matter of course. I
have just recently gone through a bout of Trigeminal Neuralgia and twice daily
Reiki sessions kept the pain enough at bay so that I could still enjoy my
day. My
Reiki Master offered the Master/Teacher Degree to me after six-months of daily
training. I have found my life’s calling – while I help myself to
become whole and useful once again, I am helping others to do the same.
After my Third Level attunement, I gave a full-body session and an attunement
to my Reiki Master and also to my husband. I am teaching him the ways of
Reiki. He has seen this miracle blossom in my life and is amazed at the
results.
How
do I use Reiki and incorporate it into my daily life? Each
day, I give myself a full Reiki session. I treat my husband (and he treats
me); our dog, our plants, our food, our home, our cars and I do distance
energy sessions using a ‘Reiki box’. I also do free Reiki sessions on
my friends and family. I do sessions for others in my practice at the healing
centre. I listen for my guides and follow their advice, if it is right
for me to do so. As a result, I have become much more in tune with my
body, emotions, mind, and spirit. I am changing at a cellular level. People
and things that once meant so much to me (but are unhealthy to my
spiritual growth) are simply falling away. I am embracing a much
healthier lifestyle and I’m reaping the benefits of that embrace.
What
is my understanding of the nature of Reiki energy? The
word Reiki is a Japanese kanji for universal life-force energy. For me, this
means that I am acting as a channel for the loving energy of Pure Divine
Being or God. It flows into me, as I get myself out of the way, fills me
up and is then drawn by the client into their body. As much as is needed is
drawn by them. The Reiki energy itself is intelligent, going to where it
is needed the most. I get as much out of each session as the client
because, until I am full of Reiki energy, it will not be drawn out. I am never
depleted of my own energy and thus always feel great after ‘giving’ a
Reiki session. Reiki is simple and produces measurable results. It is
power, light and love. Reiki transcends the man-made divisions of religion,
economics, location, gender, and race.
Can I trace my
lineage back to Mikao Usui? Yes. What
is our lineage and what does that mean? My
lineage includes the following Reiki Masters: Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata, Phyllis Furumoto, Claudia
Hoffman. Mary Shaw, Christine Henderson, Bruce Way, Arianne McMinn, Mona
Khalaf, and Allison Dahlhaus. This is my
family of former Reiki Masters from whom I ‘descend’.
I am forever energetically connected to these be-ings
and can easily access them through Spirit. They have cleared the path for me
as I am clearing a path for future generations of Reiki students. They have
set their hearts on Reiki and have left me this wonderful legacy of love and
compassion for our fellow travelers. I owe them my gratitude.
This is my Usui Reiki Master, Allison Daulhaus. Do
I teach the revised, documented, and accurate history of Reiki? The
history of Reiki is fraught with many myths and parables. I have read several
books on Reiki including: Reiki-A Guide to Your Personal Healing Power;
The Original Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui; Essential Reiki; Mastering
Reiki; Empowerment Through Reiki; Reiki-An Introduction; Reiki Fire; Reiki,
The Healing Touch and The Spirit of Reiki. The book called The
Spirit of Reiki by William Lee Rand, Frank Arjava Petter and Walter Lubeck
includes the history I teach as the research has been done and documents
uncovered that back up their dissertation. This is an outline of what I teach... Mikao
Usui was born on August 15, 1865 in Taniai, Japan. He practiced Kiko, which is
similar to Qi Gong. He studied medicine, psychology, religion, and spiritual
development. He was a member of a metaphysical group called Rei Jyutu Ka. Usui
became secretary to Shinpei Goto (the head of the health and welfare
department who went on to become the mayor of Tokyo). Usui sensei started his
own business, which failed. In
1914, at the age of 49, he decided to become a Buddhist monk. In 1922, he went
on a 21-day retreat of meditation, prayers, chanting and fasting at Mount
Kurama in Kyoto, Japan. While standing under a waterfall, he did a meditation
designed to open and purify the crown Chakra. This caused him to have a
spiritual awakening on the final day of his retreat. A powerful light
entered the top of his head. His awareness was expanded and he realized a
great power had entered him. He intuitively knew he could now heal others
without depleting his own energy, as he had when he practiced Kiko. Mikao
Usui moved, with his wife and children, to Tokyo in April 1922, and he started
a healing society named "Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai". Then he opened a
clinic in Harajuku and began doing Reiki sessions and teaching classes. In
September 1923, the great Kanto earthquake killed over 140,000 people and left
thousands more injured and homeless. Usui sensei and his students worked
day and night, giving Reiki to help as many as they could. The need for
healing continued for many years, as you can imagine. At
the age of 60, in 1925, he opened a larger clinic in Nakano and then began
traveling and lecturing until he crossed over from a massive stoke on March 9,
1926. He taught over 2,000 students and trained 16 teachers. He wanted this
simple technique to be available to people worldwide. Mikao
Usui is buried at Saihoji Temple in Suginami-Ku, Tokyo. A large memorial stone
was erected by his students, describing his life and work with Reiki. We
all owe Mikao Usui a deep debt of gratitude for what he has done for our
world. Do I teach the five
principals of Reiki? I
teach them and I live by them. They offer me a simple guideline for my conduct
with others and myself. They are
Just for today, I will not anger.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Just for today, I will work hard on myself.
Just for today, I will be kind to others.
When
do I suggest my students may be ready for public practice? Not
everyone who learns Reiki wants to practice on others or teach. This is a very
personal decision. Each student is guided down their own path for their
own betterment. For me, I knew from the first session that this is what I want
to do with my life. I am absolutely dedicated and devoted to the practice
of Reiki. I study, learn and practice it daily. The student must find his
or her own level of interest and dedication. I suggest doing case studies and
practicing Reiki for at least six months before you consider charging for a
session. The CRA now requires students to do 24 practicum hours before being
considered as a Registered Practitioner. How many people do I
teach in a class? I
teach in a small group of up to four students, which takes place over the
course of one or two days. There is also considerable home-study by way of
reading and practicing. I offer on-going instruction as the need in the
student arises, as well as a monthly Reiki share. I
am fully insured across Canada for any accident that may occur during a Reiki
session.
Directly
after a Reiki session, you should allow yourself time to come fully back into
your awareness. You may feel so relaxed that you are spaced out. I
suggest sitting for 15 minutes and sipping a cool glass of purified
water. Becoming in touch with your feet and their placement on the floor also
helps a great deal. Over
the next little while, you may notice that you are detoxifying the waste that
has built up in your system. You may want to allow more time in the
‘little room’ in the morning. You should increase your water and/or herbal
tea intake so that the toxins are flushed out more readily. You may want to
rest more, so allow time for that. It’s suggested that you avoid junk
food and alcohol so that your body may find its own level of healthy be-ing. Most
people feel an immediate improvement in their level of pain. Energy and
alertness increase daily and a feeling of overall well-being may be
noticed. Do Reiki
Practitioners channel disembodied entities? No.
We are 'channels' for the Reiki energy (Universal Life Force Energy) to flow
through. Just as a cord is a conduit for electricity, our goal is to become a
clear and clean conduit for the Reiki energy. Dr. Usui shares that by doing
the three pillars of Reiki, we can become a conduit for the healing energy
that he called Reiki. Sometimes people become confused about Reiki because
there are some Practitioners who claim to be able to 'channel these
disembodied entities'. This is not what Reiki is all about. No.
Anyone of any religion or of no particular religion can practice Reiki. There
is nothing about Reiki that will interfere with anyone's belief system. On a
personal note, my own faith in the Spiritual nature of the Universe has
certainly deepened and broadened. For some, Reiki is most certainly a
spiritual practice in that we align with a power greater than ourselves, no
matter what name we call it, and we become willing to be of service to others.
However, it is not necessary that one even be spiritual to practice Reiki and
help others. Reiki
is no more magical than any other system of healing or allopathic modern
medicine. We cannot expect to get well over night. To begin with, three
or four sessions over ten to fourteen days are recommended to remove
entrenched blocks in your energy system; then once a week or once every two
weeks until the issue has resolved. You will begin to notice some improvement
after the first session. Long-standing health issues are usually energetically
cleared in five to six visits. Dis-ease generally begins in the energy field,
so if we keep our subtle bodies healthy using Reiki, and our physical bodies
healthy with good nutrition and exercise, we should be able to remain active
and whole. What if I’m
already seeing another Doctor? It
is strongly recommended that you do not discontinue any
medications or therapies planned by your medical practitioner. Reiki
energy works in concert with all other forms of therapy. It is a wonderful
compliment to other sessions. We can all work together to get you feeling
healthier, happier and more whole. This is the holistic approach. The Reiki energy goes to exactly where it is needed so a Reiki practitioner never needs to diagnose or prescribe – nor does ethics or law allow them to. Karuna Ki ReikiI've
also been attuned to Karuna
Ki Reiki. I am offering the Full Master course and attunement, to all Usui
Reiki Masters, who have been actively practicing and teaching for a minimum of
six months, in this loving and compassionate frequency of Reiki. Please follow
the link for further information. Here is my Master/Teacher Certificate. This is my Karuna Ki Reiki Master, Frances Wartnaby |
